History

What staggering changes have occurred across the world in the 100+ years since that intrepid little band of Scandinavian immigrants first met in Hinsdale to found the "Swede's Church"! Not one of those sixteen people could have conceived of flights to the moon, of heart transplants, of prodigious calculations done by huge computers in a wink, of explosives that obliterate an entire city in seconds, of being transported from Stockholom and Chicago between sunup and sundown.  And yet...the same purpose for which they gathered on February 6, 1892, are still at the heart of our fellowship - our congregation-this Evangelical Covenant Church of Hinsdale, which they founded on that wintry Sunday over a century ago!

 And what kind of church do we have as we position ourselves for the challenges of our second century?  It is first, a caring church, where members and friends are nurtured, encouraged and supported.  It is a friendly church, where people of all ages and backgrounds celebrate their diversity in the unity of the body of Christ.  It is a church that is faithful to the gospel of Christ, looking back to Calvary and the empty tomb for its spiritual roots, and looking forward with great expectation to being "caught up together with Him in the air".  In short, it is a church  which has truly experienced over a "century of growth; an eternity of faith".  And if, in God's timetable, the church-age continue for another 100+ years, may God grant that those who follow us today - our children and theirs to the third and fourth generations - can say in 2092 that God has continued faithful to them and they to Him.
